Pravnav Chopra founded NEMI Teas in 2017 to produce brilliant tea whilst helping to lower the unemployment levels amongst the refugee communities, which sits at nearly five times the national unemployment level.
Pravnav saw the numbers of immensely talented and employable refugees in the UK, but also the bias that existed against them. He identified three factors which were often scaring employers off:
1) Language barriers
2) Lack of experience
3) Outdated labels of what it means to be a refugee
NEMI Teas is systematically destroying these biases and demonstrating to employers refugees’ employability. By employing them, NEMI is teaching them English, providing them with relevant UK work experience, and ultimately creating a more positive label that incentivises employers to hire them.
The refugees they work with are involved in running events, warehousing, packaging, social media and research work. This gives them the ability to have a UK company on their CV and a local referee who can vouch for their work ethos and ability.
NEMI Teas is also a leader within the sustainability movement as both its teabags and packaging are 100% plastic-free and compostable. Even the string attached to the teabag is by ultrasound and not traditional glue which has plastic. All the teas are Organic, Fairtrade and Rainforest-Alliance certified thus ensuring the farmers are paid a fair-wage.
The business has come along way in the last few years, yet isn't done yet! Pravnav's target is to empower 1500 refugees by 2025 - that's a good excuse for a cuppa!
